On Wednesday, August 9, at 8:45pm, Officers were sent to the 1600 block of SW 48 on a domestic call. Officers had been out earlier in the evening at the same residence but the suspect was not present. The female was told to call if he came back and she needed assistance. Officers were told he was in the south alley. The officers approached and boxed the male suspect vehicle in. The suspect backed into one patrol car and dumpster almost running over the patrol unit with an officer inside the patrol car. He then began driving forward at the second officer and his patrol car, ramming the second car into a shed and fence. The officer fired at the suspect. Life saving measures were taken by the officers until fire and AMS arrived. The suspect was taken to an area hospital with life threatening injuries. The suspect was pronounced dead at the hospital. Next of kin has been notified. He is identified as Daniel M Smith, age 39. The homicide unit and CSI is on scene and investigating.
