Bicycle & Pedestrian Safety Reminders

Nature of Incident: Bicycle & Pedestrian Safety Reminders
Location: Camarillo, CA
Date & Time: 8/15/2023
Unit(s) Responsible: Camarillo Police Department Traffic Bureau
Camarillo Police Community Resources Unit
Narrative:

Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety

As summer break concludes and Camarillo students return to school, the Camarillo Police Department wants to take the opportunity to highlight a few safety reminders for drivers and pedestrians. Drivers in our city need to be mindful of the increase in children on bicycles, walking on sidewalks and in crosswalks around our schools.  Our children’s safety as they make their way to and from school is a top priority.

The Camarillo Police Department takes the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists seriously and will look for unsafe violations made by bicyclists, drivers and pedestrians.

The Camarillo Police Department also wants to remind families to wear helmets while riding a bicycle, scooter, or skateboard.  Helmets are available for free if needed, thanks to the generous donation made by the Camarillo / Somis Pleasant Valley Lion’s Club. A helmet can reduce death or a serious head injury during a fall or collision. It is illegal for persons under 18 years of age to operate a bicycle, scooter, skateboard, roller skates, or in-line skates without the use of a helmet.

To keep you and your family safe, the Camarillo Police Department offers the following tips:

PARENTS
  • Teach your kids not to assume a vehicle will stop when they enter the roadway.  Make eye contact with the driver and/or wait for the vehicle to stop.
  • Tell your kids not to look at their cell phone while walking across the street and/or riding their bikes.
  • Make sure your kids have their helmet properly secured on their head prior to leaving.
  • Tell your kids to continuously look for vehicles while crossing the street.
  • Tell your kids to use the crosswalk if there is one and follow crossing guards’ instructions when they are present.

PEDESTRIANS
  • Only cross at marked crosswalks or intersections, preferably with a stop sign or signal.
  • Look for cars backing up. Avoid entering the street between parked cars.
  • Make eye contact with drivers. Don’t assume they see you.
  • Wear bright clothing during the day and use a flashlight at night.
  • Pedestrians may not walk/run in bicycles lanes when sidewalks are available.

DRIVERS
  • Wait for pedestrians to fully proceed through a crosswalk before entering the crosswalk. Be courteous and patient.
  • Stay off the phone.
  • Follow the speed limit.
  • Look for pedestrians when backing up or turning.
  • Wait for the crossing guard to be completely out of the roadway before proceeding through an intersection.

BICYCLISTS
  • Always wear a helmet. They are required by law for anyone under 18.
  • Bicyclists must travel in the same direction of traffic and have the same requirements as any slow-moving vehicle.
  • Bicyclists should ride in marked bicycle lanes, when available, leaving sidewalks for pedestrians. If riding on the sidewalk, stop and look before entering the roadway
  • Do not use a cell phone while riding the bicycle
  • Make sure the bicycle is in good working order prior to riding by checking the brakes and tires

The Camarillo Police Department’s goal is to reduce the number of pedestrian and bicycle accidents through education and enforcement.  If you have any questions, please call the Camarillo Traffic Bureau at (805) 388-5146.

If your child needs a helmet, they can contact the Camarillo Community Resources Unit at (805) 388-5155 or come by the police station located at 3701 E. Las Posas Road between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm.
