Community Reminder: Abandoned Dogs and City Pound
Community Reminder: Abandoned Dogs and City Pound
Saint Marys Police Dept. and Utility Staff have noticed a concerning uptick of dogs being abandoned within the City of St. Marys that are not residential dogs of our community. This leads us to believe in the alarming potential that unwanted dogs are being brought into the city for abandonment due to the town having its own dog pound.
SMPD would like to make it known anyone conducting such abandonment of dogs for this purpose within the City of St. Marys will be cited and potentially criminally charged for violation(s) of city code and/or Kansas statute.
SMPD has and does perform follow-up when it has received tips about this potential animal neglect and/or abuse. SMPD has in the past and will continue to cite or charge irresponsible animal owners within the city as necessary if violations of the city code are apparent.
The city pound is a safe refuge for community pets to be safeguarded while waiting to be reunited with their owners, not an exit strategy for unwanted pets.
We mean all this respectfully, and thank you for your attention,
Chief Derek Cid
