Incident: DUI Driver Arrested during Safe Routes to School Operation

Location: In Front of Petaluma High School
Suspects: Catherine England (43-year-old, Petaluma Resident)
Charges: Driving Under the Influence (23152(a) CVC)
On August 16, 2023, at approximately 2:21 PM, personnel from the Petaluma Police Department were diligently working the Safe Routes to School program as this was the first day of school for most schools in Petaluma. An Officer was in the area of Petaluma High School preparing to monitor traffic for school dismissal time at 2:25 PM. At the above listed time, the Officer observed a vehicle speeding in front of the High School and made an enforcement stop contacting the driver (England). Upon contact, England displayed symptoms of intoxication. During the investigation, Officers determined England was driving under the influence of alcohol and was subsequently arrested. It was determined that England was driving with a blood alcohol content of more that 4 times the legal limit of .08%. England was booked into the Sonoma County Jail on the above listed charges.
The Petaluma Police Department encourages people who visit and enjoy Petaluma, to plan ahead and either designate a sobor driver, use ride share or call a taxi to avoid drinking and driving. Driving Under the Influence is 100% preventable.
The Petaluma Police Department is committed to increasing overall traffic safety and reducing the number of alcohol-related collisions. We will continue our efforts to locate and identify impaired drivers. Drivers caught driving impaired and charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 to $20,000 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.
