Incident Summary:

On August 17th, 2023, at 5:34 am, the Petaluma Police Department received a call from a victim who reported that a male suspect was actively burglarizing their vehicle. The victim, who lives on Lindberg Lane, was alerted after their family member exited the residence and observed the suspect inside the vehicle.  The suspect was removing items from the glove box and center console.

Upon seeing the victim’s family member, the suspect quickly exited the vehicle.  The suspect lifted up his shirt and removed an object from his waistband area prior to fleeing the area on foot.  The victim’s family member reported that they believed the object resembled a firearm.

Officers arrived in the area within minutes of the call and began to check the area for the described suspect.  Officers located the suspect a block away and he was detained without incident.  No firearm was located on the suspect.  Through the course of the investigation, it was learned that the suspect was a 17-year-old juvenile from the Lakeport area.  The juvenile suspect was transported and booked at the Sonoma County Juvenile Detention Facility for: 10852 VC; Vehicle Tampering.

Due to the report of a firearm possibly being seen, Petaluma Police Department K9 “Pinky” was called out to conduct a K9 search of the residential area for any discarded firearm.  No firearm was located.

Prior to hitting the streets, K-9 Pinky and her handler Officer Williams completed an extensive 10-week K-9 detection school. The Petaluma Police Department K-9 Unit is excited to welcome K-9 Pinky to the team.
