Incident Summary:
 
On August 19, 2023, at approximately 3:51 PM, the Petaluma Police Department received a call about an adult male reportedly walking through Steamer Landing Park naked.
 
Petaluma police officers arrived on scene a few minutes later and contacted a James Francis Johnson of Petaluma, standing next to a vehicle wearing only a black speedo and fur-lined boots. Johnson who was on local probation with search terms that indicated he submit to search of his person and property. During a search of Jonhson’s property a loaded Smith &Wesson, .40 caliber handgun was located, which had a high-capacity magazine in the well.
As officers attempted to arrest Johnson and secure him in handcuffs, Johnson began to physically resist the officer’s efforts.  After a brief struggle, Johnson was secured in handcuffs without further incident.  
Johnson was transported to and booked at Sonoma County’s Main Adult Detention Facility for violation of 25850 (A) PC- Carry loaded firearm: In public place, 32310 (A) PC-Manufacture/sale/etc. large capacity magazine, 148 (A)(1) PC-Obstruct/resist peace officer, and 1203.2 (A) PC-Violation of probation.

It is vigilant community members who contact police in a timely manner to report suspicious activity, that assists officers in apprehending the suspects and help us keep our community safe.
