Tropical Storm Hilary Flood Watch
Tropical Storm Hilary is expected to be at its peak strength between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday, August 20, with heavy rains and high winds. A flood watch is now in effect for Southern California; expect localized flooding in low-lying areas of Newport Beach. Residents are advised to limit travel to emergencies only, and avoid flooded roads and low-lying areas. Lightning and thunder are possible.
Newport Beach City crews will be deployed throughout the day and night to mitigate storm impacts, including pumping water from streets, keeping storm drains clear and using sandbags to help protect property. The Orange County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) has been activated. For Countywide information on weather, John Wayne Airport advisories, and SCE power updates, visit ocgov.com/hilary.
