SUBJECT: Unsubstantiated reports of multiple robberies at the Redwood City Costco
 
DATE/TIME: August 21st 2023
 
LOCATION: Costco, 2300 Middlefield Road, Redwood City
 
Media Information: There have been recent posts on Social Media regarding a series of seven robberies which were alleged to have occurred at the Redwood City Costco, 2300 Middlefield Road within the past few weeks. There have been no reports to the Redwood City Police Department of any robberies occurring at that location during that time frame.
 
However, we would like to make the public aware of two recent incidences where thefts have occurred in the Costco parking lot.
 
The first instance occurred on August 11^th where the victim was approached by an unidentified Hispanic Female Adult who approached the victim and gave her a fake gold necklace. While doing so the suspect actually stole the victim’s gold necklace in the process. The victim realized it after she arrived home.
 
The second instance occurred on August 17^th where an unsuspecting victim was approached by an unidentified Middle Eastern Female Adult. The female suspect approached the victim and gave him a kiss on his cheek. The victim realized a few moments later that the suspect had stolen his necklace.
 
Both cases are being actively investigated by this department. We’d like to remind folks to be mindful of their belongings when being approached by people they don’t know. There is a common criminal scam where suspects approach victims and offer them free jewelry while stealing the victim’s actual jewelry. The suspects often target the elderly.
