IMPD Homicide Detectives Make Arrest in 2022 Murder Investigation
INDIANAPOLIS- Yesterday 28-year-old Mario Pena was extradited back to Indianapolis for a murder warrant for his alleged role in the death of 30-year-old Luis Hernandez.
On Sunday, October 16, 2022, just after 3:00 am, IMPD Northwest District officers responded to the 6300 block of W. 34th Street on a report of a person shot. Officers arrived and located an adult male with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound(s). Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services (IEMS) arrived and transported the victim to an area hospital. Shortly after arriving at the hospital the victim was pronounced deceased by medical staff.
IMPD homicide detectives responded to the scene to begin the investigation. The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency responded to identify and collect potential forensic evidence. The Marion County Coroner's Office assisted and determined the exact manner and cause of death.
IMPD homicide detectives continued their investigation and identified the alleged suspect. On March 7, 2023, the MCPO filed charges for murder against Mario Pena. A warrant was issued for his arrest. Mr. Pena was arrested by Texas authorities on an unrelated charge in held for extradition on his warrant. On Thursday, August 24, 2023, Pena was extradited back to Marion County and booked at the Community Justice Center on the charge of murder.
