Emeryville Police Department Reports Civil Unrest and Assault Incident

On 08/27/23 at approximately 4:30 p.m., EPD received a call from a business at the Bay St. Mall about a group of approximately 50 young adults inside the store causing a disturbance.  Officers responded to the business and escorted the juveniles out.

At about 5:15 p.m., while patrolling the area, officers observed that another group of about 100 young adults arrived at the Bay St Mall.  Over the next 30 minutes, an additional 100-150 more young adults showed up at the mall.  At about 5:40 pm, the first of several fights were reported near the courtyard area of the mall.  Officers attempted to maintain the peace while additional smaller fights broke out.  Officers called for assistance from neighboring law enforcement agencies to assist in quelling the disturbance and stopping the fights.

At about 5:50 p.m., a report of a single gunshot fired was received, near Bay St and Ohlone Way.  Officers responded and did not locate any victims or suspects or that incident.  At about 7:00 p.m., a caller reported a person was stabbed near Elm Dr.  Officers responded to that location and found a juvenile victim who had been stabbed.  Emergency medical responders were called to the scene to render aid.  The juvenile victim was treated and transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

EPD officers, with the assistance of allied agencies, patrolled the area until the crowds dispersed.  By 8:30 p.m., most of the crowds had left the area.

At this time, there have been no reports of anyone else being injured or reports of businesses being looted.
EPD wants the community to know that our staff is dedicated to the safety of those who live and visit Emeryville.  Police Department investigators will work diligently to hold those responsible accountable for their actions.
