Weather Update #5: Hurricane Idalia

Hurricane Idalia has now made landfall and weather conditions in our area continue deteriorating. Increased wind, heavy rainfall, isolated tree damage, and the risk of tornadoes will continue through this evening.

At this time, it is imperative that anyone on the island SHELTER IN PLACE. The island is experiencing localized flooding along roadways, downed tree limbs, and power outages. Crews will not be able to assess or clear debris until after the storm has passed. It is unsafe to travel the roadways at this time.

Georgia Power is currently working to restore power to outage areas on the beachside, but may not be able to restore all power immediately. However, it is very likely power will go out again before the storm has passed. Wind gusts are continuing to increase and becoming unsafe for Georgia Power line crews. They will not be able to work on restoring power until it is deemed safe again to do so. Residents and businesses should plan for the possibility of being without power for longer periods of time through at least tomorrow.

The Glynn County Sheriff's Office is assisting the Georgia State Patrol with additional patrolling support for the island.

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has NOW CLOSED the Sidney Lanier Bridge. The closure will remain in effect for all vehicular traffic until further notice, to ensure the bridge has undergone an extensive inspection. Those who MUST travel to/from Jekyll Island should plan to use alternate routes through at least tomorrow morning.

REMINDER
There are no Jekyll Island evacuations or road/causeway closures planned at this time
. Conditions are continuing to be monitored and additional updates will be communicated as needed.
