"DUMP BUCK" RETURNS HOME

“Dump Buck” Returns Home

In October of 2021, a Wisconsin DNR Warden and a Janesville Police Department Sergeant opened a joint investigation into the harvesting of a well-documented deer living near the Janesville City Landfill.  A person of interest was identified in the case as Jason Kline.

Through investigation, information was obtained through interviews, social media and cell phone applications.  The result of which lead to the seizure of the buck, who was nicknamed the “Dump Buck”.  Jason Kline also received charges which were referred to both the Rock County District Attorney’s Office and the City of Janesville Attorney’s office.  Those cases were prosecuted and closed in Rock County Court.

A Warden from Wisconsin DNR seized the buck from a taxidermist in northern Wisconsin back in 2021 and it remained in evidence until July of 2023.  The buck was recently taken to Nature’s Touch Taxidermy in Milton, WI.  They graciously donated their time and materials to mount the buck for educational purposes.  The buck mount was completed today and turned over to the Janesville Police Department who will maintain possession of it.

Several outdoor enthusiasts and citizens have taken great interest in this specific case as it would be a harvest of a lifetime for most hunters.  As the investigation unfolded and details were obtained we learned the buck was shot from a climbing tree stand on Universal Forest Product’s property.  The buck died approximately 80 yards away on land managed by Lycon.  A “trophy” photo of the deer and Kline were taken and shared on social media.  A specific American Transmission Power pole was seen in the background of the photo.  This pole was identified by a local electric company employee.  Jason Kline did not have permission to be on either property.  Locations of cellular camera photographs owned by Kline were also located.  Those cameras were also placed on property which he did not have permission to be on.

As we move into the 2023 deer hunting season, please practice safe and ethical hunting.  The City of Janesville maintains ordinances on hunting and shooting which can be found on the City of Janesville Webpage https://www.janesvillewi.gov/.  The Wisconsin DNR also releases seasonal hunting regulations which can be found on the Wisconsin DNR webpage https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/.
