IMPD Detectives Make Arrest in Saturday Homicide

INDIANAPOLIS- IMPD Detectives arrested 21-year-old Damarius Coffy for his alleged role in the Saturday homicide in the 2900 block of Cold Spring Rd.

On Saturday, September 2, 2023, just after 9:00 pm, IMPD Northwest District officers responded to 2950 Cold Spring Rd. on a report of a person shot. Officers arrived and located two adult males outside with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound(s). Two firearms were also located near the males. An adult female contacted 911 and advised she believed she shot one of the involved males. Officers detained the female and a male later identified as Damarius Coffy. Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services (IEMS) arrived and pronounced both males deceased at the scene.

IMPD homicide detectives responded to the scene to begin their investigation. Preliminary information suggests there was a disturbance between the two males and shots were fired during the altercation. The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency responded to identify and collect potential forensic evidence. The Marion County Coroner’s Office (MCCO) responded and will determine the exact cause and manner of death. The MCCO will release the decedent's name once a proper next-of-kin notification has been made.

The investigation continued and investigators were able to identify Damarius Coffy as an alleged suspect in this case. He was interviewed and the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office (MCPO) was consulted. Coffey was subsequently arrested for felony murder. Felony murder occurs when a person is murdered during the commission of a felony.

Additionally, the female was later released after consultation with MCPO.

An arrest is merely an accusation. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will make the final charging decisions.  The individual should be considered innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
