Suspected Fentanyl Overdoses in Union City

Union City, CA – In the past 24 hours, the Union City Police Department responded to five suspected drug overdoses involving fentanyl, which included two fatalities as a result. In the morning of September 5th, 2023, officers responded to the area of Medallion Dr. and Whipple Rd. for an unresponsive individual. Personnel on-scene attempted life-saving measures and the individual was transported to a local hospital. The individual was later pronounced deceased, and fentanyl is suspected to be involved. Later that evening, EMS personnel responded to the Hayward-Union City border for an unresponsive individual, who was cold to the touch. The individual was identified as a 17-year-old and pronounced deceased at the scene. Not too far away from the area, a second unresponsive individual was located, but was revived by EMS personnel and transported to a local hospital. There were no apparent signs of foul play, but evidence of narcotics use was located at both scenes of the unresponsive subjects. In the early hours of September 6th, 2023, there was another report of another unresponsive individual gasping for air, who was found in a restroom on the 33000 block of Western Avenue. The Alameda County Fire Department responded and revived the individual after administering Narcan. The individual was stabilized and transported to a local hospital. Shortly after that, another individual was reported to be unresponsive in a vehicle in the parking lot of the same property. The Union City Police Department and Alameda County Fire Department responded once again and administered Narcan to the individual. The individual was revived and transported to a local hospital. Suspected fentanyl was located inside of the vehicle. The Union City Police Department recognizes this recent trend and wants to bring awareness to help prevent additional incidents from occurring. UCPD Detectives are actively investigating these cases to identify the source.
