PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
A Heat Advisory is issued when the combination of heat and humidity is expected to make it feel like it is 95 to 99 degrees for two or more consecutive days, or 100 to 104 degrees for any
length of time.
Seniors and those with chronic health problems or mental health conditions are at increased risk. Homes without air conditioning can be much hotter than outdoors.
Use air conditioning to stay cool at home or go to a place that has air conditioning. Check on vulnerable friends, family members and neighbors.
To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! In cases of heat stroke call 9 1 1.
IF YOU ARE UNDER A HEAT ADVISORY:
Find air conditioning. Do not use electric fans when the temperature outside is more than 95 degrees, as this could increase the risk of heat-related illness. Fans create air flow and a false sense of comfort, but do not reduce body temperature.
Avoid strenuous activities.
Watch for heat illnesses such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke. Seek medical attention or call 9-1-1 if you, a family member, or neighbor are experiencing one of these.
Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing.
Check on family members and neighbors, particularly those who are elderly and handicapped. Make sure they are keeping as cool as possible and drinking plenty of water.
Drink plenty of fluids. If you or someone you care for is on a special diet, ask a doctor how best to accommodate it. Also, alcoholic beverages, while refreshing, can cause dehydration and lead to a heat related illness.
Never leave a child, adult, or animal alone inside a vehicle.
COOLING CENTERS
Due to the current Heat Warning, the Carlstadt Office of Emergency Management will be opening cooling centers from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM today through Saturday. The cooling centers are located at:
- Carlstadt Civic Center – 425 Fourth Street
- Carlstadt Borough Hall – 500 Madison Street – 2nd Floor Council Chambers
Pets will be welcome at the Civic Center Shelter provided they are crated, caged, or leashed. The pet owner is responsible for the care and conduct of their pets.
ADA qualified service dogs will be allowed at any shelter. These dogs must meet the requirements of Service Animal under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Please note that the cooling centers will only offer a place to stay cool. The only refreshments to be offered are bottled water. Food and any other beverage will be reh responsibility of the individual using the cooling center.
FURTHER INFORMATION
RECOGNIZE AND RESPOND
Know the signs of heat-related illness and the ways to respond to it:
HEAT CRAMPS
Signs: Muscle pains or spasms in the stomach, arms, or legs
Actions: Go to a cooler location. Remove excess clothing. Take sips of cool sports drinks with salt and sugar. Get medical help if cramps last more than an hour.
HEAT EXHAUSTION
Signs: Heavy sweating, paleness, muscle cramps, tiredness, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea or vomiting, or fainting
Actions: Go to an air-conditioned place and lie down. Loosen or remove clothing. Take a cool bath. Take sips of cool sports drinks with salt and sugar. Get medical help if symptoms get worse or last more than an hour.
HEAT STROKE
Signs: Extremely high body temperature (above 103 degrees) taken orally; red, hot, and dry skin with no sweat; rapid, strong pulse; dizziness; confusion; or unconsciousness
Actions: Call 911 or get the person to a hospital immediately. Cool down with whatever methods are available until medical help arrives.
Remember if you’re hot, so is your pet, so keep them cool and hydrated as well.
Please remain safe during this time of high heat. Check on elderly or handicapped neighbors. Most importantly, stay cool and drink a lot of water to keep hydrated.
