Incident: Suspicious Circumstance

Location: 800 Block of Lakeville Circle Petaluma
The Petaluma Police Department recently has received phone calls from concerned citizens regarding a social media post made by a community member regarding unknown subjects who were allegedly impersonating police officers. The following is a brief synopsis of the incident that occurred on 08/30/2023.
On 08/30/2023 at approximately 9:23 PM, Petaluma PD officers responded to a report of suspicious subjects knocking on the reporting party’s door at an apartment in the 800 block of Lakeville Circle in Petaluma. As the incident progressed, the reporting party stated some of the subjects were in tactical gear and wearing Petaluma PD uniforms in the parking lot. The reporting party further stated they were walking throughout the parking lot.
An officer was already in the area and was on scene in less than two minutes while the reporting party was still on the phone with Petaluma PD Dispatch. The initial officer on scene was unable to locate anyone in the area and made contact with the reporting party.
In addition to speaking with the reporting party, officers spoke with roommates and neighbors, all of which were unaware of the incident and had not heard or seen anyone in the area. They additionally checked the area for possible video surveillance but did not locate any.
Through the extensive interviews and canvassing completed by officers, we were unable to find any independent information to substantiate the original report. However, the incident is still under investigation, and we encourage anyone who may have information regarding this specific incident to contact the Petaluma Police Department.
The Petaluma Police Department have received additional calls recently regarding a separate incident afterwards that community members believed may be associated. We investigated that incident and were able to contact two male subjects who were actively recruiting for a local business and were wearing identification associated with that business. After the business was researched, the incident was determined to have no merit to criminal activity or anyone impersonating police.
We always encourage the public to contact the Petaluma Police Department either via 911 in an emergency or 707-778-4372 if they see something suspicious.
