On Friday September 8th at approximately 9:16 p.m. Amsterdam Police were notified by Montgomery County 911 of reports of a serious motor vehicle accident that had just occurred on State Highway 5s in Amsterdam near the intersection with Destefano Street. Simultaneously an Amsterdam Police Patrol Sergeant who had been on routine patrol in the area called out observing the same.
The sergeant confirmed the initial report that a motorcycle and passenger vehicle were involved. With emergency medical personnel en route the sergeant checked the wellbeing of the motorcyclist who was unresponsive. Additional police personnel responded to the scene and began closing the highway to traffic. Members of the Amsterdam Fire Department arrived on scene and began life saving measures on the motorcyclist. Sadly the motorcyclist was unable to be revived and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The driver of the passenger vehicle was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was not injured in the crash. The driver is identified as a 52 year-old male from the City of Amsterdam. He was operating a Chevrolet equinox. The driver is fully cooperating with the investigation and there are no signs of impairment by drugs or alcohol.
The deceased was operating a Suzuki 999 motorcycle. The deceased is identified as a 33 year-old male from the Town of Florida.
The accident scene was still active into the early morning of September the 9th with Amsterdam detectives on scene being assisted with the investigation by members of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and the New York State Police.
The investigation is ongoing and further details will be released when they become available and after proper notifications have been made.
