On September 10, 2023, at approximately 03:52 a.m., the Petaluma Police Department received calls from residents of the 900 block of S McDowell Blvd regarding a vehicle collision. Reporting parties advised Petaluma Dispatch that a silver BMW had driven into the front yard of a residence and collided with an unoccupied parked vehicle that was in the driveway.
Officers arrived on scene and located the BMW along with a male driver and female passenger. The driver was identified as Daniel Niles Jr (21 years old, Petaluma). Neither the driver nor the passenger were injured during the collision.
Niles Jr appeared to have been traveling southbound on S McDowell Blvd and attempted turn left onto eastbound Covey Way. Niles Jr was unable to safely navigate the turn which resulted in the vehicle leaving the roadway and colliding into a parked vehicle.
The investigating officer observed Niles Jr had objective signs of intoxication and conducted a DUI investigation. Upon completion of the DUI investigation Niles Jr was determined to have been driving the vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and was placed under arrest. Niles Jr was then transported to the Sonoma County Main Adult Detention Facility where he was booked into custody.
