Loss Prevention Helps SMPD ID Robbery Suspect After Theft and Assault
While shoplifters and retail thieves continue to target local malls, the San Mateo Police Department continues to make arrests with the help of witness statements and technology.
San Mateo, CA – On September 7, 2023, at 8:19 p.m., San Mateo Police Department was notified of a shoplift and assault that took place at Macy’s at Hillsdale Shopping Center (301 Hillsdale Mall). We were advised a male subject had placed numerous bottles of perfume in a plastic bag, and when he realized a loss prevention agent began to follow him, the subject abandoned several bottles, but left the store without paying for those he carried out in his bag. Once outside, the suspect was approached by the agent who attempted to retrieve the unpaid for items. At that time, a physical struggle ensued, turning this theft into an Estes Robbery, and the suspect fled the mall in a vehicle. But, not before the Loss Prevention agent was able to obtain a license plate of the “getaway” car.
Officers were able to obtain an investigative lead and, based on security footage and witness statements, identified Ruben Polanco as the subject responsible for the robbery at Macy’s. On September 9, 2023, the Fremont Police Department located the suspect vehicle and detained Polanco without incident. SMPD officers responded and placed Polanco under arrest and transported him to San Mateo County Jail where he was booked for 212.5(c) PC.
The San Mateo Police Department would like to express its gratitude to Fremont PD for their assistance and encourage residents, bystanders, and the like to be good witnesses. The successful resolution of crime is a testament to the collaborative efforts of law enforcement and community members committed to maintaining the safety and security of our city.
