UPDATE - Area around S. Hermosa and Ramona is clear and open to all traffic.

UPDATE: Sierra Madre Police have cleared the area around S. Hermosa and Ramona Avenue.  The bear has left the area and is no longer inside the home. California Department of Fish and Wildlife will continue their investigation, including gathering DNA, to determine if the bear is responsible for other break-ins.

SUMMARY:Sierra Madre Police Officers were dispatched at 1:55 am to a home in the 100 block of South Hermosa Avenue by homeowners that came home to find their front door open; the homeowners suspected a bear was inside their home and immediately called 9-1-1.  Police Officers arrived on-scene and, while securing the home, heard grunting sounds inside the home.  Officers made the decision to exit the home and secure the area.  California Department of Fish and Wildlife officials have have been dispatched and are enroute to the location.  SMPD will coordinate action with Fish and Wildlife once they arrive on-scene.  It is the goal of SMPD to resolve this matter quickly and safely to both human and animal.
