New Outdoor Warning System siren test at locations across Berkeley on Sunday, 9/17 at 12 noon

On Sunday, September 17, 2023 at 12 noon, the City of Berkeley will conduct the first ever test of our new citywide Outdoor Warning System network of emergency sirens. View siren locations

During that test, people outdoors within a 1/4-1/2 mile range of a siren location should expect to hear a brief three-tone chime and a voice announcement. Listen to a recording of the test message.

After the siren test, take this “Did You Hear It?” Siren Test Day Survey. Tell us whether you heard the siren and where you were on Sunday, September 17 at 12 noon. Your anonymous feedback will help us understand the audibility of this system in real conditions.

The Outdoor Warning System will be used during large-scale emergencies to alert people to seek more information when there is an immediate threat to a significant portion of the population near the siren.

At this time, the City of Berkeley does not maintain a regular public testing schedule for the outdoor warning system. Learn more about the City of Berkeley's Outdoor Warning System
