The National Weather Service in Caribou has extended the

* Flash Flood Warning for... East Central Hancock County in southeastern Maine... Southwestern Washington County in southeastern Maine...

* Until 1000 PM EDT.

* At 839 PM EDT, Doppler radar and automated rain gauges indicated heavy rain falling across the warned area. Between 3.5 and 6.5 inches of rain have fallen. Additional rainfall amounts of 0.5 to 1 inch are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly. HAZARD...Flash flooding caused by heavy rain. SOURCE...Radar and automated gauges. IMPACT...Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas.

* Some locations that will experience flash flooding include... Machias, Cherryfield, Jonesport, Steuben, Harrington, Jonesboro, Columbia Falls, Columbia, Deblois, Millbridge, Centerville, Franklin, Gouldsboro, Addison, Sullivan, Winter Harbor, Beals, Roque Bluffs, Whitneyville and Northfield. This includes the following streams and drainages... Morancy Stream, Taylor Branch, East Branch Chandler River, Pecky Brook, New Stream, Beaver Brook, Old Stream, Pleasant Bay, Crotch Camp Brook, Atlantic Ocean, Curtis Creek, Heath Brook, Libby Brook, Machias River, East Machias River, Cole Creek, Englishman Bay, Flanders Stream, Pleasant River, Western Little River, Knowles Brook, Northwest Branch Montegail Stream, Southwest Branch Indian River, Tenney Brook, Little River, Narraguagus Bay, Chandler River, Trout Brook, Great Brook, Schoodic Brook, Tunk Stream, Bells Brook, Frenchman Bay, Indian River, West Branch Narraguagus River, West Branch Pleasant River, Lamsen Brook and Dan Hill Brook.

Instructions:

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding. In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross flooded roads. Find an alternate route.
