Health advisory issued for people who may be traveling to EEE affected areas.
The Hadley Board of Health has issued a health advisory for Hadley residents traveling to: Brimfield, Wales, Holland, Sturbridge, Southbridge, Charlton, Dudley, Webster, Oxford, Auburn, Millbury, Sutton, Douglas, Uxbridge, Northbridge, Grafton. These communities have been assigned a moderate or high-risk level for EEE.
Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) is rare but is very serious due to the severity of symptoms. Approximately 50% of people who contract the virus die from it and those who survive often suffer permanent neurological problems.
Use EPA approved insect repellents (list can be found here: https://www.epa.gov/insect-repellents/find-repellent-right-you)
Avoid outdoor activities around dusk and dawn
Wear loose-fitting clothing that will cover exposed skin (thin and tight clothing such as leggings and athletic shirts will not provide full protection)
Repair window/door screens
Empty yard containers of standing water
