Advisory

Multi-Jurisdictional School Zone Speed Watch Effort; September 25 - 29, 2023

The last week of September, the Green Bay Police Department will be partnering with area law enforcement agencies to focus on a coordinated speed watch effort in school zones.

The agencies joining the GBPD in this initiative from September 25 through September 29, 2023, include Ashwaubenon Public Safety, the Brown County Sheriff’s Office, De Pere Police Department, Hobart-Lawrence Police Department, Oneida Police Department, Pulaski Police Department, and Wrightstown Police Department.

Law enforcement will be issuing citations based on recorded speeds for those traveling above the mandated limit in school zones, which is 15 mph when children are present and going to and from school per state statute, unless posted otherwise. The fine amounts may vary in each jurisdiction and additional citations may be issued for other violations.

“We must slow down and make pedestrians the priority as we get readjusted to the increase of foot and bicycle traffic with school back in session,” said Chief Chris Davis, Green Bay Police Department. “We could eliminate a lot of traffic safety concerns and issues, if we drive better together.”

As an additional reminder, when flashing red warning lights on school buses are activated, drivers must stop not less than 20 feet from the bus. Travel may continue when the bus resumes motion or the operator turns off the flashing red warning lights.

This initiative will be funded with grant assistance from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.
