Cranford OEM Update: Weekend Coastal Storm Information.

The following is an update from the Cranford Office of Emergency Management (OEM) as of 09/22/2023 @ 3:30 PM:

A coastal storm that will impact our area this weekend was named a tropical storm today at 2:00 PM. The naming of this storm does not change the overall impact scenario for our area; it just means that the coastal storm has met specific criteria, deeming it a tropical system. The most significant impact will be on the coastal communities in the region.

The Cranford area will receive rainfall, heavy at times, along with breezy conditions. Rainfall amounts have overall increased but are expected to be spread across a long duration, essentially the entire weekend, with a potential lull Saturday night, so flood chances are low. If they do materialize, flood impacts are likely limited to nuisance and poor-drainage flooding. Flash flood potential is also low with this storm. Winds appear to be too low for advisory-level criteria.

Residents in flood-prone area should have multiple ways to receive weather warnings.  Please encourage residents without NIXLE warnings to text 07016 to 888777 to subscribe to Cranford's free NIXLE message platform.  Text messaging is only used during significant weather warnings.

Residents are also encouraged to ensure that storm drains near your property are clear to facilitate drainage.  As part of this, please retrieve and discard any unclaimed newspapers on your driveway, sidewalk, or streets.

As a preparedness measure, DPW has opened the river gates today and, out of an abundance of caution, has deployed the portable pumps to Balmiere Parkway.

Residents should report any non-emergency utility problems directly at the contact points below.
