Tropical Storm to impact Hoboken with heavy rain; Discounted parking available; Residents encouraged to move cars from flood prone areas
The City of Hoboken, the Hoboken Public Safety Department, and the Office of Emergency Management continue to monitor Tropical Storm Ophelia, expected to impact our area over the weekend.
The storm, currently off the Carolina coast, is predicted to bring heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and high wind gusts early tomorrow morning into Sunday evening, with the heaviest rainfall expected on Saturday, between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. The National Weather Service expects a rainfall total of approximately 2 to 3 inches through Sunday night, with isolated higher amounts. Hoboken could experience wind gusts up to 40 mph, as well as periods of flooding. Residents are encouraged to avoid driving during periods of the heaviest rainfall, if at all possible.
Avoid flood-prone areas
The National Weather service has issued a flood advisory for Hudson County from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Any intense rainfall of greater than 0.8 inch per hour could result in flooding in low-lying areas.
Barricades will be deployed near flood-prone intersections. Do not walk or drive through barricades or flooded areas.
Please report flooded intersections and clogged drain inlets by calling the NHSA Hotline at (866) 689-3970.
Discounted parking
Temporary no-parking signs have been posted in low-lying and flood-prone areas. These signs are advisories and vehicles will not be towed, but residents are encouraged to move their cars from those areas.
Due to the storm and potential for flooding, the City is offering a special rate of $5 per 24-hour period in Garages B (28 Second St.) and D (215 Hudson St.) to residents with a valid Resident On-Street Parking Permit or Temporary Parking Permit. This rate will be available from 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, through 8 a.m. Monday, Sept. 25.
Hoboken residents with disabilities who possess either a handicapped license plate or hang tag for their permitted vehicle may also park in the Midtown Garage (371 Fourth St.) for the same reduced rate.
Garage space is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Regular rates apply at other times.
Secure loose objects
Residents should secure all loose objects outside or bring them inside, especially from balconies. Outdoor tents should be taken down depending on the wind load.
Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines, resulting in power outages.
Please report power outages and downed wires to PSEG at https://nj.myaccount.pseg.com/myservicepublic/outagepublic
City Events Cancelled
All City recreation programs and the Senior HOP bus trip to Secaucus have been canceled for Saturday. The status of Sunday recreation programs and "First Street Sundays" will be announced on Saturday.
