Advisory

Tropical Storm Ophelia impacting Hoboken this weekend; discounted parking offered; Drivers encouraged to move cars from flood-prone areas

The City of Hoboken, the Hoboken Public Safety Department, and the Office of Emergency Management continue to monitor Tropical Storm Ophelia, expected to impact our area this weekend.

The storm is predicted to bring heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and high wind gusts through late Sunday evening. The National Weather Service expects a rainfall total of approximately 2 to 3 inches through Sunday night, with isolated higher amounts. The next high tide for the area is at approximately 2:45 p.m. Hoboken could experience wind gusts up to 40 mph, as well as periods of flooding in low-lying areas. Residents are encouraged to avoid driving during periods of the heaviest rainfall, if possible.

Avoid flood-prone areas

The Office of Emergency Management reminds residents to avoid flood-prone areas. Intense rainfall of greater than 0.8 inch per hour could result in flooding in low-lying areas. Barricades have been deployed near flood-prone intersections. Do not walk or drive through barricades or flooded areas.

Please report flooded intersections and clogged drain inlets by calling the NHSA Hotline at (866) 689-3970.

Discounted parking

Temporary no-parking signs have been posted in low-lying and flood-prone areas. These signs are advisories and vehicles will not be towed, but residents are encouraged to move their cars from those areas.

Due to the potential for flooding, the City is offering a special rate of $5 per 24-hour period in Garages B (28 Second St.) and D (215 Hudson St.) to residents with a valid Resident On-Street Parking Permit or Temporary Parking Permit. This rate will be offered through 8 a.m. Monday, Sept. 25.

Hoboken residents with disabilities who possess either a handicapped license plate or hang tag for their permitted vehicle may also park in the Midtown Garage (371 Fourth St.) for the same reduced rate.

Garage space is available on a first-come, first-served basis and often reach full capacity during significant weather events. Regular rates apply at other times.

Secure loose objects

Residents should secure all loose objects outside or bring them inside, especially from balconies. Outdoor tents should be taken down depending on the wind load.

Damaging winds could blow down trees and power lines, resulting in power outages.

Please report power outages and downed wires to PSEG at https://nj.myaccount.pseg.com/myservicepublic/outagepublic

City Events Cancelled

All City recreation programs and the Senior HOP bus trip to Secaucus have been canceled for today. The status of Sunday recreation programs and "First Street Sundays" will be announced later this afternoon.
