On Saturday night, the Petaluma Police Department deployed eight officers to conduct a DUI Saturation Patrol as part of our ongoing Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) Selective Traffic Enforcement Program Grant. These officers were specifically patrolling and looking for impaired drivers. Between 4:00 PM and 2:00 AM, officers arrested 5 drivers for driving under the influence.
During this operation, 82 drivers were stopped, 15 were evaluated for intoxication and 5 were arrested for driving impaired. Two of the drivers arrested for DUI were also found to be driving without a California Drivers License. One of the drivers arrested for DUI had a blood alcohol content of .28%. That is more than three times the legal limit of .08%. In addition to the five DUI drivers caught during the operation, an additional DUI driver was arrested by routine patrols.
The Petaluma Police Department encourages people who visit and enjoy Petaluma, to plan ahead and either designate a sobor driver, use ride share or call a taxi to avoid drinking and driving. Driving Under the Influence is 100% preventable.
The Petaluma Police Department is committed to increasing overall traffic safety and reducing the number of alcohol-related collisions. We will continue our efforts to locate and identify impaired drivers. Drivers caught driving impaired and charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 to $20,000 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.
If you witness a suspected DUI driver, the Petaluma Police Department encourages citizens to call 911.
Funding for the DUI Saturation Patrol was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
