City disperses 700 containers; distribution to continue tomorrow
The City distributed 700 lidded trash containers to help residents comply with the updated ordinance that mandates properties place their trash at the curb in a tightly lidded container. The regulation aims to mitigate rodent activity by limiting their access to food from trash.
Today's distribution has ended as the allotted daily supply exceeded demand.
Distribution will continue on a first-come, first-served basis under the following schedule:
- Sept. 26 – 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. – Multi-Service Center hockey rink, on Adams Street between First and Second Streets
- Sept. 28 – 2 p.m. - 7 p.m. – 13th & Jefferson Streets
- Sept. 30 – 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. – former Union Dry Dock, 901 Sinatra Dr.
Registered agents of more than one property who seek to pick up more than six containers must pick up containers at the Union Dry Dock location on Sept. 30.
Registered agents must bring a copy of their management contract agreement.
Each property can take up to three containers per address.
Residents must bring proof of residency, which may include a utility bill, signed lease, or license.
As a reminder, residents who already have a container with a tight-fitting lid do not need to acquire a new container. The new regulation also has no effect on recycling or bulk/ furniture pick-up.
Properties of over 10 units with space constraints that are unable to use containers must use disposable garbage bags with rodent repellent that are at least 1.1 mils thick. If the garbage bags do not have rodent repellent, the bags must be at least 3 mils thick. If trash from these properties is not in a container and is instead in an allowable disposable plastic garbage bag, the garbage must be stored indoors between collections.
Property owners or the responsible agent of properties that have 10 or fewer units with space constraints can apply for a 1-year exemption to containerize garbage online at https://hoboken.seamlessdocs.com/f/containerization_exemption.
The City has also extended the containerization compliance grace period, which will now end on Oct. 8. After which, properties that are not in compliance with the ordinance could be subject to fines.
