Public Safety Notification-Explosives
On 10-01-23 at about 3:30 pm, the Janesville Police Department was notified of a possible explosive device found inside a residence. A cleaning company was cleaning the residence in the 1200 block of Badger Street when they discovered what appeared to be a military grenade in the basement. The residence was evacuated for safety precautions. Mutual aid assistance was requested from the Dane County Bomb Squad. Specialized technicians from the Dane County Bomb Squad entered the residence and collected the item. The item was inspected and it was determined to be a grenade body with no functioning fuse system. The rest of the residence was searched and deemed safe for the residents to return. The Dane County Bomb Squad will properly dispose of the item.
Some explosive items are not easily recognizable. We encourage people to immediately report any and all suspicious explosive-related activities. If it is a life-threatening emergency, please call 9-1-1. If you encounter any such activity or item, be as descriptive as possible when reporting the incident or item to law enforcement. Law enforcement will assess the situation and provide further guidance. You may be asked to evacuate the immediate area if it is safe to do so.
