Gilroy Police Department Discover Remains Confirmed to be Missing Woman and Identify Suspect
GILROY, CA — On August 10, 2023, the Gilroy Police Department (GPD) initiated an investigation into the disappearance of Alyssa Salazar, a 33-year-old resident known to frequent the Gilroy and Salinas areas. Her family reported her missing after she had not been seen since late July.
The investigation led Gilroy Detectives to a property in unincorporated Santa Clara County, where a search was conducted. The GPD Crime Scene Investigators, in collaboration with the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Crime Laboratory and the Office of the Medical Examiner-Coroner, uncovered human remains, which have now been officially confirmed to be those of Alyssa Salazar by the Medical Examiner and Crime Lab.
Based on the preliminary investigation, Detectives believe this was a homicide. GPD Detectives, in partnership with investigators from the District Attorney’s Office, were able to identify the suspect as Iban Alfaro Escobedo, a 31-year-old Gilroy resident. Escobedo and the victim had a prior dating relationship, and Escobedo is already in custody at the Santa Clara County Jail on charges related to a previous case involving the victim. With the new developments from this investigation, he will now face charges for the murder of Alyssa Salazar.
This is still an on-going investigation, and further updates on the case will be provided as they become available. Anyone with information related to this investigation is urged to contact Gilroy Police Detective Jason Greathead at (408) 846-0373. Tips can also be submitted anonymously by calling the tip line at (408) 846-0330. For all media inquiries, please call (408) 846-0347.
