Police Activity on East 1st
Today at approximately 12:45 pm, during a routine inspection of Extra Space Storage, Roselle PD was notified of containers being found that contained an unknown liquid substance. Out of an abundance of caution, we shut down the area to vehicles and pedestrians. We want to thank our partner agencies, Roselle FD, Union Bomb Squad, Union County Hazmat, FBI, Union County Sheriff K9 Unit, Union County Police, and Roselle Park PD for assisting us in maintaining the security of the area and deeming the liquid substance found was of non-alert status for any bomb or hazardous material. The storage facility was turned back over to management and the area was reopened.
We want to thank the public and the management of Extra Space Storage, for their cooperation as we had the area shut down for some time in order to conduct our investigation and to ensure that there was no threat to the public.
Statement from Mayor Donald Shaw:
“In light of a recent incident that initially raised concerns but ultimately proved to be a false alarm, I want to express my unwavering support for our dedicated first responders. The safety and security of our community rely on their vigilance and commitment to protecting us from potential threats. While it is natural to be cautious and vigilant in today's world, it is equally important to recognize that not every suspicious incident is indicative of a genuine danger. We must trust our first responders’ expertise in distinguishing between genuine threats and false alarms, while also remaining vigilant citizens ourselves. Let us continue to work together with our police to ensure the safety and well-being of our community, appreciating their tireless efforts in maintaining peace and security.”
