INCIDENT: In Custody Death Investigation
LOCATION: West Valley Detention Center, Rancho Cucamonga
DECEASED: Ricky Whipple, 35-year-old resident of San Bernardino
SUMMARY: On Friday, October 6, 2023, deputies assigned to the West Valley Detention Center were alerted to a medical emergency by inmates. Upon arriving at the housing segment, deputies located Ricky Whipple unresponsive and experiencing a medical emergency. Medical aid was rendered by deputies and medical staff. Emergency medical staff responded and transported Whipple to a local hospital. Despite life-saving measures, Whipple was pronounced deceased.
Detectives with the Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division responded and assumed the investigation. The investigation is ongoing and no further information is available at this time.
Ricky Whipple was arrested by San Bernardino Police Department on April 23, 2023, for arson and a parole violation.
