When the officer activated their overhead lights, the suspect immediately drove into the oncoming traffic lane on E. Longwing Lane and turned southbound onto Eagle Road jumping the median. The suspect continued fleeing in the southbound lanes of Eagle Road hitting speeds of almost 90 mph. When the suspect reached Eagle Road and the Railroad tracks the suspect veered to the left and jumped the median into oncoming traffic and crashing into several vehicles in the northbound lanes.
The suspect was pronounced deceased on scene. The citizens in the other vehicles had minor injuries.
While this was occurring, one of the male suspects stole a security vehicle from the Village. Meridian Police Officers located the second stolen vehicle on Franklin Road and engaged in a separate pursuit, but quickly terminated the pursuit. Ultimately Idaho State Police located the stolen security vehicle and initiated a pursuit which included Oregon State Police as well. Questions related to that pursuit should be directed to Idaho State Police.
The Meridian Police Department is still looking for information on the two male Hispanic suspects regarding the thefts and stolen vehicle. If you have any information regarding the suspects, please contact the Meridian Police Department non-emergency dispatch at 208-377-6790.
Because this is a police action resulting in a death, the Ada County Critical Incident Task Force has been activated, with Ada County Sheriff’s Office leading the investigation. Any video from the crash that occurred can be sent via email [email protected] or contact non-emergency dispatch 208-377-6790.
“The safety of all residents is our top priority at the Meridian Police Department,” said Police Chief Basterrechea. “We understand that pursuits are inherently dangerous however we do not get to dictate the suspects actions.”
The Meridian Police Department would like to thank the public for any assistance they may provide in this investigation as well as the drivers who avoided the area.
