Sheriff's Department Participates in the Great California Shake Out
DATE: Thursday, October 19, 2023
INCIDENT: The Great California Shake Out
LOCATION: San Bernardino County
SUMMARY: On Thursday, October 19, 2023, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department participated in the Great California Shake Out, an annual earthquake preparedness drill. Our Emergency Operations Division (EOD) coordinated the exercise for all county Sheriff’s Divisions and Stations.
The Sheriff’s Department opened its Valley and Desert Department Operations Centers (DOC). The centers tested the department's communications systems, equipment capabilities, and emergency operation procedures.
Employees throughout the county participated in an evacuation drill, and various scenarios covering such emergencies as building collapse, fires, generator failure, and more.
The objective of the exercise was to gauge the level of preparedness in the event of a significant earthquake. This allows for improvement in our processes and ensures our ability to provide continued law enforcement services during a major incident.
Sheriff Shannon Dicus was pleased with the outcome and feels confident the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is ready to handle a large-scale emergency such as a major earthquake. The Sheriff commented, “I couldn’t be prouder of my staff. They worked diligently, used all available resources, and continued to serve the public.”
