OWI Task Force Enforcement Results
Middleton Police Department & University of Wisconsin-Madison Police Department report enforcement results from their OWI Task Force Grant
As part of state and national efforts to help keep roadways safe for all travelers, Police Officers with the City of Middleton and the University of Wisconsin-Madison Police Departments made 528 traffic stops during our OWI Traffic Grant, between January - September 2023. Our departments have focused an additional 275 hours on OWI enforcement during this timeframe. During the grant, officers made a total of 22 OWI arrests.
While the focus of the initiative was to deter impaired driving, officers also issued citations and made arrests during traffic stops for the following:
- 109 speeding violations
- 39 operating after revocation or suspension violations
- 3 open intoxicants violations
- 14 vehicle registration violations
- 4 vehicle equipment violations
- 78 other moving violations
- 11 safety belt violations
- 5 felony arrests
- 1 misdemeanor arrest
- 5 warrant arrests
"Our officers work throughout the year to help make our roadways and communities as safe as possible for everyone, but this grant allows us to focus our attention on Operating While Impaired violations,” Sergeant Quamme said.
Impaired driving is 100 percent preventable
- If you plan to drink, identify a sober designated driver or find a safe alternative way home. Never allow someone to get behind the wheel impaired.
- Protect yourself and your passengers every time you travel. Ensure everyone is buckled up. Watch your speed and eliminate distractions.
- Download the free “Drive Sober” mobile app from the WisDOT website. The app includes a “find a ride” feature to help locate mass transit and taxi services.
- If you encounter a driver you suspect is impaired, call 911. Provide as much detail as possible on the driver, vehicle and location.
