OPD News:

OPD Auto Burglary Pilot Program

In response to growing concerns over auto burglaries, the Oakland Police Department (OPD) is launching an Auto Burglary Pilot Program. Starting today, Friday, October 27, 2023, the temporary pilot program will get under way, and run through the weekend.

As part of the program, OPD is exploring an additional method for community members to report in progress auto burglaries. To make reporting easier for our community members, OPD created @OaklandAutoBurg on Instagram and X. This is not a replacement for calling or texting 911, but an additional reporting method for this weekend.

If you see something suspicious, send a direct message (DM) to @OaklandAutoBurg, or post with details, including a description of the individual(s), vehicle, license plate, and location of the crime. If it is safe to do so, snap a picture or take a video from a distance.

As a reminder, we are asking our community members to NOT engage with individuals involved in these crimes, as they can be armed and dangerous.

Once the pilot program has concluded, the Instagram and X accounts will be deactivated.

Auto Burglary Prevention Tips:

If you cannot remove electronic devices from your vehicle, turn off the device.

Park in well-lit areas.

Park in a secure garage.

Utilize anti-theft devices.

Don't leave personal information in your vehicle.

Keep your vehicle tidy.

Report suspicious activity.
