ARRAIGNMENT/BAIL STATUS: Kaai was held pending arraignment in Amsterdam City Court.
INCIDENT NARRATIVE: On September 11th, 2023, the Amsterdam Police Department received a complaint of a burglary prior that had occurred at the Amsterdam Youth Soccer shed located on Locust Avenue in the City of Amsterdam. Several items were reported stolen sometime between 9/9/23 and 9/11/23. On September 10th, the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office was investigating a similar incident which had occurred at Isabel's Field in the Town of Amsterdam. As a result of that investigation, Derek-Michael Kaai was identified as the suspect in the Isabel's Field burglary.
Kaai was located on 9/12/23 by Amsterdam detectives and placed into custody for the burglary at Isabel's Field. While taking Kaai into custody he was found to be in possession of items that were linked to break-in of the Amsterdam Youth Soccer Club shed. Further investigation by Amsterdam Detectives revealed that the items recovered from Kaai on 9/12/23 were indeed stolen from the Amsterdam Youth Soccer Club shed. An arrest warrant was then applied for and signed by Amsterdam City Court Judge Lisa W. Lorman. On 10/27/23, an Amsterdam Police patrolman observed Kaai walking on Market Street. Kaai was stopped and placed under arrest on the active warrant. Kaai was then transported to Amsterdam Police HQ's where he was processed on the above charges and held pending arraignment in Amsterdam City Court.
While there was probable cause for this arrest, all persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
