Trick or Treat Saftey Tips
Halloween is a cherished tradition, but the excitement of the night can cause children to forget to be careful. Both children and adults need to think about safety on this annual day of make-believe. The following is a notice to all who may be out and about on Halloween.
Motorists:
Watch for children darting out from between parked cars and children walking on roadways, medians, and curbs.
Enter and exit driveways carefully.
Be sure to watch for children in dark clothing, especially after dark.
Parents:
Make sure that a responsible person will be supervising children under 12.
Plan and discuss a route for trick-or-treating. Know the names of older children’s companions. Plan a return time.
Instruct your children to travel together in familiar areas.
Teach your children to stop only at houses or apartments that are well-lit and never to enter a stranger’s home.
Tell children not to eat any treats until they return home.
Pin a slip of paper with the child’s name, address, and phone number inside a pocket in case he/she gets separated from the group.
Costume/Face Design:
Only fire-retardant materials should be used for costumes.
Costumes should be loose to allow warm clothes underneath and should not be long so that they are a tripping hazard (Falls are the leading cause of unintentional injuries on Halloween).
Costumes should be brightly colored and easily visible.
Mask can easily obstruct of child’s vision. Facial makeup is preferred. If masks are worn, be sure the nose, mouth, and eye openings are large enough.
Children:
Do not enter homes or apartments.
Walk, do not run, from house to house. Do not cross yards and lawns where unseen objects can present tripping hazards. Walk on sidewalks, not in the street.
Carry flashlights.
Knives, swords, and other accessories should be made from cardboard or flexible materials. Do not carry sharp objects.
Do not eat anything unwrapped.
Have a safe and happy Halloween!
