IMPD Arrests 15-Year-Old for Murder in Afternoon Shooting

IMPD Homicide detectives arrested a 15-year-old tonight for his alleged role in a shooting of a juvenile teenage male just hours early.  This arrest occurred thanks to the cooperation of community members and the quick response from officers.

Earlier today, shortly before 1:00 pm, IMPD North District officers were dispatched to 2200 Ralston Ave (Leadership and Legacy Campus) on a report of a person shot.  When officers arrived, they located a teenage juvenile male in the parking lot with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds. An Indiana State Police trooper also responded to the scene.  The ISP trooper and an IMPD officer provided medical attention to the victim until medic arrived.  The victim was transported to Methodist Hospital in critical condition where he later passed away.

Witnessed provided officers with a description of a possible suspect and additional members of the community provided officers with information on the suspect’s location.  Several officers canvassed the area looking for the suspect and located the suspect about a half mile away from the shooting.  Officers gave the suspect verbal commands and the suspect followed the directions given.  The suspect was taken into custody without further incident.  Officers located a gun in the suspect’s possession.

IMPD Aggravated Assault and Homicide detectives responded to the scene to begin the investigation. IMPD Victim’s Assistance also responded to provide resources for those involved.  Detectives believe this was a targeted incident.  No other individuals besides the one victim were injured as a result of the shooting.

The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency responded to assist in identifying and collecting potential forensic evidence. The Marion County Coroner’s Office will be assisting and will determine the exact manner and cause of death. The MCCO will release the name of the decedent once proper next-of-kin notification has been made.

As a result of their investigation, detectives arrested the suspect for murder.  An arrest is merely an accusation and he should be considered innocent unless and until found guilty in a court of law.  The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will make the final charging decision.

Anyone with information about this incident should call Detective Larry Craciunoiu at the IMPD Homicide Office at 317.327.3475 or e-mail the detective at [email protected].  Media inquiries should be made to the IMPD public affairs office at [email protected].
