OPD Successfully Rescue Juvenile Victim of Human Trafficking
For Immediate Release November 10, 2023
OPD NEWS:
The Oakland Police Department (OPD) VICE/Child Exploitation Unit, in partnership with the Riverside County Anti-Human Trafficking Taskforce (RCAHT), has successfully located and rescued a female juvenile victim of human trafficking.
OPD received a tip from the National Human Trafficking Hotline regarding the juvenile. Following an investigation, OPD detectives, with the assistance of RCAHT, identified the juvenile's location in Oakland and safely recovered and reunited the juvenile victim with their family.
Last week, the investigation led to the arrest of a non-Oakland resident in the City of Emeryville. The individual is currently facing human trafficking charges.
This year, OPD has successfully completed more than 500 critical investigations, resulting in more than 130 arrests, with notable outcomes, including:
- The rescue and services offered to 15 juveniles as a pathway towards safety and recovery.
- The arrest of 42 individuals for solicitation is a significant step towards dismantling the demand for these illegal activities.
- The arrest of 17 individuals suspected of human trafficking. This demonstrates OPD's unwavering commitment to bringing individuals to justice.
OPD urges anyone with information about human trafficking to contact the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888 or the City of Oakland tip line at 510-238-2373.
Also, OPD is collaborating with ReportJohn.org, allowing the public to report traffickers, buyers, and their vehicles. OPD will send notification letters to registered owners, raising awareness about the dangers present in the area and encouraging cooperation with law enforcement.
