The Grosse Pointe Farms Department of Public Safety is providing an update regarding the accident that occurred on November 17th, 2023, at approximately 9:18 pm. As this accident is still under investigation, limited information is being released at this time.
The accident, which occurred on Ridge Road between Moran Road & Lewiston Road, involved a single motor vehicle with two occupants, a 16-year-old male driver & 18-year-old male front-seat passenger. Both occupants were residents of Grosse Pointe City. The 2021 BMW X3 vehicle was traveling westbound on Ridge Road, approaching Moran Road at a what a witness described as an extremely high rate of speed. The driver lost control of the vehicle, left the roadway, struck a streetlight pole on the north side of the street and a tree.
Arriving public safety personnel were able to quickly remove the driver, who was transported to St. John Hospital in Detroit. He was initially listed in critical condition, but has since been upgraded to stable. The front-seat passenger was removed with extrication tools and pronounced deceased at the scene.
A Michigan State Police Crash Investigator responded to the scene to aid in the investigation and reconstruct the accident scene. The vehicle’s event data recorder will be examined to provide further insight into the details of the crash. The accident remains under investigation.
