Tips for a Fire-Safe Thanksgiving
Did you know more home cooking fires occur in the U.S. on Thanksgiving Day than any other day of the year?*
The Fremont Fire Department would like to help ensure that you and your loved ones enjoy a safe holiday season.
Please consider reviewing these fire safety tips to help keep you and your family safe:
1. Stay in the home when cooking your turkey, and stay in the kitchen when you’re cooking on the stove top.
2. If you’re roasting, baking, or simmering food, check it regularly. Remain in the home while food is cooking, and, if it is helpful, use a timer to remind you that you are cooking.
3. Never leave children or pets unattended in the kitchen, and keep them away from knives and hot surfaces.
4. Keep matches and utility lighters out of the reach of children --- up high in a locked cabinet.
5. Be sure electric cords from an electric knife, coffee maker, plate warmer or mixer are not dangling off the counter within easy reach of a child or pet.
6. Keep the floor clear so you don't trip over bags, toys or other items.
7. Make sure your smoke alarms are connected and working. Test them by pushing the test button.
8. After your meal, walk around the home to make sure candles and fireplaces are extinguished, and unnecessary appliances have been turned off.
