South Brunswick Police continue to investigate a motor vehicle crash Monday evening that claimed the life of a 58 year old Middlesex County woman. The crash was reported at 6 PM on November 20th, and occurred on Route 1 northbound at Independence Way.

The preliminary investigation has determined that the 58 year old woman was driving a 2016 Hyundai Elantra, headed north on Route 1 approaching the intersection of Independence Way. The Hyundai left the roadway onto the grass and struck a utility pole. After striking the pole, the force of the impact sent the Hyundai back onto the northbound lanes of Route 1 where the Hyundai struck a 2004 Honda Odyssey being driven by a 72 year old South Brunswick man. The 58 year old woman suffered multiple injuries and was transported by South Brunswick EMS and paramedics to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. She died of her injuries at the hospital.

South Brunswick Police Traffic Safety Bureau was at the scene until midnight reconstructing the crash. Investigators are looking into if a medical episode or other reasoning can explain why the Hyundai left the roadway and struck the pole.

In addition to Police and EMS, the Kingston Fire Department and New Jersey Department of Transportation responded to the scene.
