Suspect Fires at Deputies and Barricades Himself in House: Lethal Force Encounter Occurs

LOCATION: 1500 block of Fairwood Way, Upland
SUSPECT(S): Charles Staudenmayer, 54-year-old Upland Resident
SUMMARY: On Monday, November 20, 2023, at approximately 3:17 p.m., investigators with the Sheriff’s Gang/Narcotics Division responded to the 1500 block of Fairwood Way to serve a search warrant for weapons and narcotics. Upon arriving, investigators contacted two individuals at the residence. A third person inside the residence began firing a weapon at the investigators.
Additional deputies, the Sheriff’s Specialized Enforcement Division (SED), and Upland Police Department responded to assist. Crisis negotiators attempted for several hours to have the suspect exit the residence. The suspect remained inside and fired several additional shots from a firearm. SED operators deployed less lethal tactics to get the suspect to exit, however the suspect remained inside. At approximately 9:28 p.m., a fire broke out inside the house. The suspect exited, and a lethal force encounter occurred. The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene. No other persons were injured. The suspect was the only occupant in the house during the incident.
Detectives with the Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division responded and are conducting the lethal force encounter investigation. San Bernardino County Fire is investigating the fire.
