INCIDENT: In-Custody Death
LOCATION: High Desert Detention Center, 9438 Commerce Way, Adelanto
DECEASED PARTY: Corey Bennett, 50-year-old Male, Resident of Adelanto
SUMMARY: On Friday, December 1, 2023, at 10:40 a.m., Corey Bennett was arrested at Victorville Courthouse as a court remand for grand theft and possession of a stolen vehicle. It was believed Bennett was attempting to bring a controlled substance into the jail facility and he was placed in a cell for observation.
On Saturday, December 1, 2023, at approximately 7:56 a.m., Bennett became ill while in the cell and medical attention was provided. Bennett’s condition worsened and he was transported to a local hospital. Despite lifesaving measures, Bennett was pronounced deceased.
Detectives with the Sheriff’s Specialized Investigations Division are conducting the investigation. The cause and manner of death is pending Coroner investigation.
