Clear Creek Fire and Locust Cove #2 Fire Updates

Nebo, NC- Firefighters continue to increase containment on the Clear Creek Fire and the Locust Cove #2 Fire. Cool, damp weather is helping crews secure firelines. The fires are currently burning approximately two miles from each other on the Grandfather Ranger District of Pisgah National Forest in the Sunnyvale area of McDowell County.  

The Clear Creek Fire is estimated at 124 acres and 85% containment. Crews are patrolling and eliminating any hotspots within 50 feet of containment lines. Dozers have built contingency lines outside the containment lines as an additional layer of defense. There are currently approximately 30 personnel working the fire.

The Locust Cove #2 Fire has burned approximately 180 acres with 55% containment. Fire intensity is light, with the northwest corner most active. Crews are focusing on the western edge, monitoring containment lines and mopping up any nearby hot spots. There are currently approximately 40 personnel working the fire.

The interior of both fires continue to hold heat, but smoke and fire activity are low. If weather conditions allow, a drone using infrared imaging will fly over both fires to locate any pockets of high heat. 

Both fires are being managed under unified command between the U.S. Forest Service and the N.C. Forest Service. The cause of both fires are under investigation.

*There is no additional information to share this afternoon on the Black Bear Fire (Appalachian Ranger District). Updates will be available if/when there are significant changes.
