Helping you safeguard your property is what we do! As our holiday gift to the first 500 San Mateo residents who register, we are giving away a CATGUARD - Catalytic Converter Self-Etching Kit that allows YOU to affix a unique number to your catalytic converter that can be registered into the CATGUARD database. This will allow law enforcement to trace the converter to a specific vehicle if the converter is stolen and later recovered.

In November 2022, SMPD was the first law enforcement agency in California to offer CATGUARD to help thwart catalytic converter left. We recognized the effect catalytic converter theft had on our community and took action to combat the problem. We purchased and gave away just under 500 kits and purchased another 500 to give away this month.

Registration is currently open to all San Mateo residents. (Verification via driver's license or indicia required at time of pickup.) Registration for the giveaway will close at 5pm on Friday, December 15th unless we reach 500 registrants before that date. The giveaway is slated for Saturday, December 30, 2023. The time and location will be provided to those registered who meet the criteria. You will be notified by email between December15th and 29th.
