Armed Robbery/Carjacking Suspect now in custody charged with vehicular homicide. SHERIFF LEVON ALLEN
On 12/8/23, An Armed Robbery occurred in DeKalb County where the victim was held at gunpoint and a Yellow Chevy Camaro was taken and the suspect fled into Clayton County.
At 9:10 pm, The Riverdale Police Department spotted the Yellow Chevy Camaro by the description and tag. Due to the suspect being armed and dangerous assistance was requested.
The Clayton County Sheriff’s Office Cobra Unit was on general patrol working the area of Riverdale Road and at 9:12pm The Cobra Unit along with Riverdale PD attempted to conduct a felony traffic stop on the vehicle.
As Law Enforcement exited their vehicle, the driver of the Yellow Camaro and suspect (Deundra Smith) turned off his headlights and fled from the scene at a high rate of speed.
Deundra Smith fled for approximately 3/4 a mile before he lost control of the Yellow Chevy Camaro crossing over into the opposite lane of traffic, colliding head on with a citizen at Riverdale Road and Garden Walk Blvd.
The vehicle Deundra Smith struck head on had 3 people in it. All three were transported to local hospitals, 2 in serious condition and 1 with minor injuries.
Unfortunately, at the time of this release, the driver of the vehicle hit by Deundra Smith passed away from their injuries this morning.
Deundra Smith is now in custody and charged as follows:
1. Theft by taking a motor vehicle (Felony)
2. Fleeing and attempting to elude police (Felony)
3. Serious injury by motor vehicle (Felony)
4. Possession of a firearm during a commission of a felony (Felony).
5. Vehicular homicide 1st Degree (Felony) (Pending)
6. Failure to maintain lane (Misdemeanor),
7. Seat belt violation (Misdemeanor),
The Armed Robbery Charge, Motor Vehicle Theft occurred in DeKalb County and will be handled by officials in DeKalb.
Georgia State Patrol was called to the scene to investigate the accident.
The Clayton County Sheriff’s Office sends out condolences to the victim's family on the tragic loss of their loved one.
