Elevated Risk of Landslides due to Incoming Storm
Due to the forecasted weather for early Tuesday, there will be an elevated risk of landslides along Zimovia Highway. Recent observations near the 11-mile slide directly south indicate active material deposition within existing debris channels.
Considering the upcoming storm with significant rain and wind forecasted, DOT&PF and the City and Borough of Wrangell have scheduled an additional road opening today from 7:00 to 7:30 pm for area residents. This window allows residents more time to prepare or to leave the area voluntarily for the storm's duration.
As previously announced, the road will be closed all day on Tuesday, Dec. 12, prioritizing the safety of residents and workers. After the storm, the slide area will be reassessed before a decision to reopen on Wednesday, Dec. 13.
DOT has installed a second 36" culvert at the slide site. This additional culvert is intended to help manage the coming storm flows.
